It’s worth learning a bit more about the solvent in spray paints and varnishes. Most of these products contain organic solvents such as gasoline and alcohol. It is the solvent that causes this characteristic acrid smell. But there are also water-based sprays available, where most of the solvent has been replaced by water. Water-based sprays are non-toxic. They can be used indoors and don’t emit harmful substances or pose a fire hazard. The downside is that they tend to be less durable. They often come with the addition of aromas making work with them more pleasant than with the regular sprays.

Let’s start from basics – what is spray? It’s a liquid, which is combined with gas in a container, and used for spraying. In common language, a spray means the actual container with such a liquid.

What does spray paint/ varnish  consist of?

  • Pigment, which gives the spray its colour

  • Binder – affects the smoothness, adhesion, elasticity

  • Additives, giving the spray extra properties

  • Thinner, a substance making spraying possible, and next – evaporation.
